2019 - Budapest will be the European Capital of Sport

March 20th, 2018

"We can be proud of this title, for our athletes, our specialists and Budapest." According to Tünde Szabó, a state affairs official, it is a great honor for Budapest to be able to wear this title next year.

Every year since 2001, Europe has chosen a country to give the title of Europe's Capital of Sport. Conditions are at least 500,000 residents, the city must arrange at least 365 sport events in a given year, including local, community, regional, national and international competitions.

Last year's high-quality Fina World Championship also clearly showed that Budapest could be an excellent home for international sporting events as well. Not forgetting that the Hungarians are a sport-loving people with whom it is easy and enjoyable to make the capital a sporty one.

Tünde Szabó believes that the title "is a clear acknowledgment that we can be a worthy hostess for large-scale sports events and that we play a leading role in international sports life in the field of leisure and sports."

Hungary organized 6 sport events in 2006, and in 2010 already 34 world-supported events were organized by Hungary. Last year the number rose to 113. Budapest - much more popular than its population and economic power would suggest it - occupied the seventh place in this regard in 2016. The government commissioner has listed more than ten reasons besides the Hungarian capital, including good accessibility, Hungarian sportsmen's love, and the fact that Budapest is one of the safest cities in the world.
