Budapest, the City of Records

Budapest gets on more and more international lists of the best cities, and thanks to the continuous developments locals also enjoy living here. 

But there still are several facts we don’t know about that make the Hungarian capital the city of records.

Thermal Baths

Budapest is a city of baths: the Hungarian capital has more thermal baths and spas than any other capital cities, and a daily 70 million liters of thermal water rises to the surface. The local bathing culture dates back to the Roman era.

Parliament

The Hungarian Parliament is the third largest one in the world. The 18-thousand-square-meter building features 691 rooms, 20 kilometers of stairs and 40 kilograms of gold was used to decorate its interiors.

Metro

The Hungarian metro line no. 1 is the second oldest one in Europe after London. The subway line was opened in 1896.

Synagogue

The Dohány Street Synagogue located in the 7th district is the second largest synagogue in the world. The 2-thousand-square-meter synagogue built between 1854 and 1859 is 44 meter high, and can accommodate 3 thousand people.

Zoo

Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden is one of the oldest zoos in the world. The zoo opened in 1865 features several beautiful Art Nouveau buildings like the Palm House, the Elephant House or the main entrance.

Festival

Budapest is home to one of the biggest music events of the world year by year. Sziget Festival has 400 thousand visitors from all over the world every August.
