November 17th, 2014
The aim of the development of Hajógyári Island expected to be realized between 2015 and 2018 is to make the area an important community and cultural center. Within the confines of the development the Hadrianus Palace and its environment will be reconstructed.

A Cultural, Sports and Recreation Park Is to Be Built Here

According to the plans the former shipyard buildings located at the southern side of the Hajógyári Island will be used as communal and cultural facilities. A multifunctional sports and recreational park and community space called Élmény-Park (Theme Park) is also to be built here. The detailed conception has to be made by 30th April 2015, for which a HUF 200 million source is available.

Hajógyári Island Is Mostly Known for the Sziget Festival

Hajógyári Island or Óbuda Island is located in the 3rd district of Budapest, and it’s mostly known for Sziget Festival, one of the biggest European pop festivals, which has been organized here every year since 1993. It’s also a popular place for hikes. The 108-ha island is 2750 meters long and 500 meters wide at its widest part. Hajógyári Bridge and K-Bridge cross the river at its western side and Árpád Bridge at its southern side. At the beginning of the 20th century it was called Nagy-sziget (Great Istand). Its current name refers to the fact that a shipyard used to operate at its southern side: after it was shut down, several companies moved into its building.
